(VIDEO) Cordless drills

Whether you make occasional repairs at home, regularly take on DIY projects or are a professional craftsman, a cordless drill is a tool every workshop should possess. The main advantage they provide is mobility. A cordless drill is powered by a battery of certain capacity, which enables us to perform jobs even in a place with no electricity supply. Our market offers a wide range of this type of tools, with different features. This text contains information about the functionality of cordless drills, and what should be taken into consideration when buying this product.

The power of the drill depends on the battery voltage (Volts). Depending on the job you are about to perform, choose the battery voltage accordingly – for simple screw tightening  the 3.6V to 9V should suffice, for drilling into wood, consider models from 10.8V to 14.4V for drilling into concrete, you will need at least 18V battery.

As the name suggests, these drills don’t have power cord, but are battery operated, and the battery needs to be recharged from time to time. For this reason, it is very important to pay attention to the battery capacity expressed in Ampere-hours, because this indicates the time your fully charged battery can endure before it needs recharging. It is preferable to own a spare battery, so you can continue working with the drill while the main one is charging.

It is also very important to pay attention to the type of battery a drill uses. Up to several years ago, the mostly present type in our market was nickel-cadmium battery, which had some shortcomings. First of all, they are heavy and oversized, less efficient and have a shorter lifespan. This is why the professional craftsmen needed a better solution, which resulted in the introduction of new lithium-ion technology, currently the most frequent. However, nickel-cadmium batteries are acceptable for hobby use, more so if we take into account the much lower prices comparing to the lithium-ion ones.

Cordless drills have a wide area of use – from the simple screw driving to drilling into solid materials like steel and concrete. This is why all models have the option to set the maximum torque, so you can adjust it accordingly (photo below). If we set the torque too high for screw driving, we risk damaging the head of the screw, making it useless.

To enable one tool to both tighten and loosen the screws, all cordless drills can change the direction of rotation, which is done simply by pressing the button just above the switch.

Same as with the electric models, turning the ring on the chuck adjusts the diameter of the chuck grip. If you would like to loosen a screw, it is recommendable to have a magnetic extension – drill bit holder. Sometimes you have to drill in a hardly accessible surface, and it is for that situation the special attachments are made. One of those attachments is the right angle drilling attachment.

Most models in the market have some additional functions, like working light or indicator for battery capacity. The newest models are produced with brushless motors, which give them more power, durability and a longer lifespan.

All Okov centers offer a wide range of cordless drills, and a part of it is presented here.
