(VIDEO) How To Use a Jigsaw

22.01.2016

Jigsaw is a widespread tool we use for fast and precise cutting of various materials. It is an excellent choice for cutting curves, complex shapes and wholes. It is used mostly by carpenters and tinsmiths, but more and more DIYers are starting to use this convenient tool. Read more to see how to use it and what you should pay attention to when buying this tool.

On most models the starting switch is located on the handle. Usually, right next to it, there is a "lock" button - when you push it, you don't have to hold the switch all the time you use the tool. Many models feature a blade speed adjustment option, which is more than welcome when working with sensitive materials. Some jigsaws emit a laser beam, leading you rectilinearly through the material, which makes cutting easier.

We advise you to place the blade 5 mm away from the material, then turn the saw on and start cutting slowly. This way the jigsaw will attain full speed before it touches the surface and it will go through it easily. Don't press or push the saw too much - let its engine and the blade do the work without your force. If you want to cut out a whole on a surface, drill it first, and then continue cutting it as soon as you make enough space for the blade.

When buying a jigsaw, you need to pay attention to a couple of things:

  • the blade - the choice depends on the material you want to cut - wood, metal, aluminum, ceramics, and so on. Furthermore, depending on the thickness and hardness of the material, you choose the size of the blade. For example, blades with more teeth that are smaller are used for cross-cutting of solid wood, and blades with bigger teeth are used for lengthwise cutting.
  • the power - again, choose it according to the thickness and the hardness of the material cut. The thicker and harder the material, the more powerful tool you need. If you intend on using the saw regularly, we advise you to choose between professional brands only, like DeWaltHitachi or Bosch.
  • additional features - all jigsaws operate on the same principle. However, some models give you the possibility of cutting under angle up to 45°, laser navigation or the extension for vacuum cleaner, that will collect the dust off of the material.

All Okov centers offer a great choice of jigsaws and additional equipment, and a part of our assortment can be seen here.
